In the sections below we'll be adding ideas as we explore further, but here are some good sites for exploring and planning your visit.
Visit Peak District - the area's official tourism website
Peak District National Park - the Peak District Park Authority and there is also the National Parks site for the Peak District
Let's Go Peak District - a site maintained by local enthusiasts with some great photos
National Trust - walks, places to visit, etc.
Derwent Valley Trust - promotes the history, arts, wildlife, access and leisure opportunities that surround the river Derwent along its 55 mile course through the beautiful Derbyshire Dales, Peak District, and Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
Accessible Derbyshire - charity maintained visitor site focused on accessible options (though, unfortunately, Vine Cottage is far from accessible)
Peak District.org - a general visitor site, a bit heavy on adverts
Peak District Online - another general visitor site
Tripadvisor can also be a good starting point.
From a gentle stroll along the Cromford Canal to scaling Kinder Scout, the Peak District has walks suitable for everyone. We'll be adding details of some of our favourites or you could check out some of the ones others have enjoyed on the OS Maps site. There's a map on the sitting room wall for you to plan your local walks and the OS Explorer maps are also in the drawer but, typically, Whatstandwell is on the edge of the standard maps.
Some short walks (under an hour)
Station Loop - a <10 min pit stop
Dukes Quarry loop - a <30 min pit stop
A loop along the canal towards Ambergate - time it right and as you cross over the canal you can drop down to the A6 for a short walk to the layby van with gorgeous bacon butties.
Some longer walks (1+ hours)
A gentle stroll to Cromford along the canal - visitor cente with drinks, toilets and a small shop at High Peak Junction. As you come out of the tunnel (or if you've gone over the top) you can follow the path away from the canal, cross the Derwent and come up onto the A6 near Homesford Tearooms
Ambergate and the Wireworks - you could take in the White Peak Distillery or The Great British Car Journey if you wanted.
Heights of Abraham - Matlock Bath; great day out with a mixture of activities that was thoroughly enjoyed by some of our family
Crich Tramway Village - Crich; home of the National Tramway Museum; regularly has special events
Great British Car Journey - Ambergate; including Drive Dads Car
White Peak Distillery - Ambergate; it's a 30 minute walk along the Cromford Canal and A6 should you want to sample their wares
Cromford Mills - Cromford; vistor centre, tours, shops, etc. at this part of the World Heritage site
We are still trying out the local cafes, pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Here are ones we, or our visitors, have tried.
The Family Tree - just down the hill serving from breakfast to afternoon tea. Also accommodation if some extra beds are needed.
The Loaf - in Crich; a bakery, coffee shop and also takeaway pizzas on Wednesday evenings
Cardale Fish Bar - in Crich; we find the Fish Special is a meal for two.
The Old Black Swan - in Crich; good, hearty, pub grub and atmosphere
The Hurt Arms - in Ambergate; "Good selection of burgers, gf etc catered for plus other choices too, reasonably priced (£49.00 for 3 meals and drinks)"
Le Mistral - in Wirksworth; from a coffee to an a la carte meal
Stones - in Matlock; for a special dinner. Easy to get to on the train.
The Bluebell -in South Wingfield; run by the same people as Stones.
There is some coverage on Just Eat, Uber Eats and there's a Dominos in Matlock
All of the major supermarkets and Ocado deliver. These are the local shops and nearest branches of the major supermarkets.
Crich Butcher (also has fruit, veg, eggs, etc.)
The Loaf - Crich bakery (also coffee shop and takeaway pizzas on Wednesday evenings)
Morrisons Daily Ambergate (closest store with extended opening hours, usually open later than the NISA in Crich)
Sainsburys Matlock or Sainsburys Ripley (usually also the cheapest fuel around)
Hardwood Logs - firewood and supplies (it's a "fun" drive up through Holloway)
Scarthin Books in Cromford (you can lose yourself for hours and it has a coffee shop when you need reviving)
Cromford Mill Cheese Shop - in the mill complex at Cromford
WeaveKnitit - in the mill complex at Cromford
